Ohigan Week

Ohigan Holiday

Higan is a Japanese term meaning “the other shore,” symbolizing the journey to enlightenment. This observance takes place during the three days before and after the Equinox. When prefixed with “O,” it signifies reverence, making this a time to honor all that is connected to the other shore—including our families, ancestors, and the path to awakening.

During this period, we reflect on the Six Paramitas. Weather permitting, we will carpool to the California Tendai Monastery to help maintain the cemetery grounds and conduct a Kujo Shakujo Service for the hungry ghosts.
